Jen, John, and Sonya are delighted to welcome Alina as the newest member of the NAGPRA Comics production team. You can now find the above bio for Alina at the "About Us" page of the NAGPRA Comics website. We are so happy Alina is joining us and will be working on a new issue for NAGPRA Comics! (If you have been keeping track, that means we have three new issues in development at the moment...)
Here is Alina's message to you: Tansi, everyone! I am a cartoonist and writer from Little Pine First Nations in Canada. I also used to work at Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatchewan, and learned from their practices how important it is for cultural artifacts to be treated with respect, and for Indigenous communities to be involved and present in museum spaces. I am very excited to be working with the team at NAGPRA Comics. I feel strongly that comics are a great teaching tool because they're accessible to everyone, even those who don't consider themselves readers, and the combination of images and texts allows people to empathize with the characters on the page more than pure text might. I was recently honored with a leadership award from the Surrey Urban Indigenous Leadership Committee for my work promoting Indigenous youth to express their identity through comics, and I hope to bring these skills to help others tell their stories. - Alina Indeed! Stay tuned for more updates in the new year. Until then, we wish all of you, your families, and communities a wonderful holiday season!
